Rozloha tohoto sultanátu je 309500 km2, žije v něm 2 773 479 obyvatel. Hlavní město je Maskat s 55 tisíci obyvateli, úředním jazykem je arabština.
Celoročně počasí je teplé, stabilní až na oblast jižní provincie, kde působí monzunové větry a častěji zde pršívá. Jinak pobřeží je vyprahlé, téměř neobydlené.
Omán byl velmi dlouho uzavřen před okolním světem a negramotnost jeho obyvatel dosahovala 99 procent. Prakticky do 60. roku minulého století byla země společensky i ekonomicky zaostalá a dá se říci, že zde vládlo i otrokářství.
Až v 70 letech min. století změnila země svůj název na Omán a hlavní město se přejmenovalo na Maskat. Základem hospodářství je těžba ropy, zemního plynu, měděné rudy a odsolování mořské vody. Zemědělství poskytuje obživu většině obyvatel.
Je to země s romantickým architektonickým rázem, bohatou historií a někdy je přirovnávaná k zemi z pohádky tisíci a jedné noci. Obyvatelé Ománu jsou lidé pohostinní, usměvaví, zvídaví, ochotní vypomoci na požádání radou i skutkem, vlastenečtí (všude věší symbol své vlajky a státního znaku).
Lidu vládne sultán Kábus Il Faid, kultovní osobnost s pevným postavením. Jelikož nemá následníka mužského pohlaví, přenese svou vládu na některého člena své rodiny. Ale člověk je to vzdělaný, milující hudbu a jeho 160 členný orchestr, který založil, jej všude doprovází. Narozeniny slaví 20.11. a den předem Ománci slaví svůj národní den.
Sultanate of Oman is situated in the southeastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a country of deserts, oases, forests and mountains (the highest has the altitude over 3000 meters) as well as a sophisticated irrigation system. Oman also includes two enclaves - Madha and Musandham. It consists of 11 provinces and it is 6 times larger than the Slovak Republic.

Year-round weather is warm and stable up to the southern provinces where there are monsoon winds and more frequent rainy periods. Otherwise the coast is arid, virtually uninhabited.
Oman had been closed for very long to the outside world and not until long its inhabitants illiteracy reached 99 procent. Roughly until the 1960s the country was socially and economically underdeveloped and even a form of slavery existed there.
In 1970s the country changed its name to Oman and the capital was renamed to Muscat. The basis of economy is mining, oil, gas, copper ores and desalination of water. Farming provides the livelihood to the majority of the population.
It is a country with romantic architecture, rich history and it is sometimes described as a country of the Arabian Night Stories. Omani people are extremely hospitable, cheerful, inquisitive and willing to help out in a difficult situation. They are very patriotic (you can see flags and portraits of His majesty almost everywhere).
The country is ruled by Sultan Qaboos Il Faid, an iconic personality with a stable political position. Since he has no male heir the rule will be transfered to a member of his family. He is very well educated, loving music and his 160-piece orchestra, which he founded, accompanies him everywhere. He celebrates his birthday on 20.11. and the day before Omanis celebrate as their National Day.
Omán je bohatá země, sultán vzdělaný člověk, který stará o blaho svých obyvatel. Mají bezplatné zdravotnictví i školství. Holt ropa je černé zlato.
Hlavním městem je Maskat s nápaditou urbanistikou, nestaví výškové super domy jako Dubaji, maximální výška budov je pevně stanovena a nesmí se překročit. Rozvíjí se poměrně rychle, staví tam i velmi kvalitní cesty. Kulturním skvostem je Opera, Muzeum námořnictví a Muzeum kadidla. Největší mešitou je ta se zlatou kopulí sultána Kábuse, včetně nádherného, na místě tkaného koberce a svého času i největšího. Dnes už je největší koberec v Dubaji. Do této mešity se vejde až 20 000 věřících.
A velmi pozitivní je i zájem země o zahraniční turisty. Připravují se pro ně nádherné pláže, ohromné plochy k výstavbě nových super hotelů. Z toho je zřejmé, že jejich klientela bude patřit k těm nejbohatším na světě. Ale také dobrá zpráva je i pro méně náročné turisty, tzv. batůžkáře. I tito mohou po Ománu docela slušně cestovat. Lidé jsou ochotní, nevtíraví, turisty vítají a vízum je lehce dostupné na hranicích a není drahé. Všude se dá pronajmout automobil a hl. město Maskat je od letiště vzdálené cca 20 min. jízdy. Anglicky se domluvíte poměrně snadno. Hotel se dá pořídit i za slušnou cenu, s čistým zázemím a to snáz než v Evropě. A v hl. městě Maskatu je i rozsáhlý krásný park, jehož součástí je i nejznámější bazar v části zvané Mutrah. Prodávající neobtěžují nakupující, jen projeví-li patřičný zájem o zboží, tak jsou nepřekonatelní v nabídce, obsluze s mnoha úsměvy a prodej není jen o smlouvání cen.

Oman is a rich country and the Sultan is an educated person who cares about the welfare of its inhabitants. They are provided with free health care and education.
The capital is Mascat with imaginative urban development, not building super high-rise buildings like for example in Dubai, the maximum height of the buildings is fixed and must not be exceeded. It is developing quite rapidly together with the construction of new high quality roads all over the country.
The Opera is a cultural gem as well as the Maritime Museum and the Museum of Incense. The largest mosque is the Grand Mosque of Sultan Qaboos, including delightful carpets vowen on the spot that used to be the largest carpet in the world. Today the largest carpet can be found in Dubai. The mosque can accommodate up to 20,000 worshipers.
The country is being discovered by foreign tourists and Omanis have a lot to offer: wonderful beaches, new modern luxurious hotels. From this it is apparent that their clientele will be from among the richest in the world. But there is also good news for less demanding tourists and even backpackers. People are helpful, unobtrusive, and welcome, the tourists visa is easily available at the borders and not expensive. Everywhere you can rent a car and the city of Mascat is approx. 20 min drive from the airport. English is widely spoken. It is not difficult to find a hotel for a decent price. The shopping can be done in numerous supermarkets but nothing compares to the atmosphere of the famous bazaar in the area called Mutrah. The shop keepers have a lot to offer and of course, if haggling over the prices is your favourite kind of sport, you must not miss this place.
